GMC produces vehicles with some of the most advanced technologies. As a result, your GMC truck or SUV offers exceptional driving dynamics and outstanding safety features. Every year, GMC improves these technologies and adds new ones to the mix. However, all these changes can be challenging for shoppers to keep on top of. Therefore, we had our GMC technology and safety experts explain the latest driving features, how they work, and their benefits.

GMC Pro Safety Driver-Assist Package

2022 GMC Sierra Denali

Meadowland GMC understands drivers’ concerns regarding safety features when purchasing a new SUV or truck. The GMC Pro Safety system offers a suite of driver-assist features in one convenient package. You can find this suite available on 2021 and newer GMC models, such as the GMC Terrain. These driver-assist features are explored below.

Forward Collision Alert

This system uses a combination of cameras and radar to scan the road for possible obstacles. The Forward Collision Alert (FCA) system alerts you when it detects a potential front-end collision with a vehicle, so you have time to act. The FCA system also provides tailgating alerts if it detects you are too close to the car ahead.

Automatic Emergency Braking

The Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system works with the FCA. The AEB system works at speeds under 50 mph and activates when you respond too slowly to an FCA. Sensors calculate your speed and distance from the vehicle in front and determine whether to apply emergency brake support. Even when braking hard, the AEB can provide additional hard braking to help mitigate or avoid a possible collision.

Lane Keep Assist With Lane Departure Warning

These technologies employ sensors that track your GMC when traveling within marked lanes. The sensors detect unintentional drifts and provide a gentle steering correction to alert you. If necessary, you can receive additional alerts to help you steer safely back to your lane. These systems don’t activate when using your turn signal.

Following Distance Indicator

Your Following Distance Indicator calculates your gap to the vehicle ahead in seconds, allowing you to maintain a safe distance. In addition, this system feeds data to your FCA to provide you with tailgating alerts.

Front Pedestrian Braking

Front Pedestrian Braking (FPB) uses similar technology to the FCA to scan for pedestrian traffic. The FPB works at speeds below 50 mph in the daytime, though it has limited performance at night and in low-visibility conditions. The FPB system sends an alert when it detects a pedestrian in your vehicle’s path. Failure to react to the alert activates emergency braking to avoid or lessen the severity of an impact.

IntelliBeam Headlights

IntelliBeam automatically toggles your high/low beams when it detects an oncoming vehicle and when you approach a car from behind.

GMC Pro Safety Plus Driver-Assist Package

You’ll find this package on most GMC SUVs, such as the GMC Yukon. This package comes with all the systems listed above, plus the following:

Lane Change Alert With Side Blind Zone Alert

These systems use sensors to monitor your side blind zones to give you eyes where you usually can’t see. They then alert you with visual cues when a vehicle quickly approaches or occupies your blind spots, so you change lanes with confidence.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

When backing up, the Rear Cross Traffic Alert system scans either side of your GMC and sends an alert when it detects approaching traffic from either side, so you can back up confidently in busy parking lots.

Rear Park Assist

The Rear Park Assist system provides distance alerts to detected objects when driving in reverse. The alerts increase as you get closer to the object in your path, helping you avoid a potential collision.

GMC Camera Systems

Modern technology allows the creative use of cameras in vehicles to provide better views around your truck or SUV. Many of these camera views come standard, and some come with option packages.

High-Definition Rear Vision Camera

This camera projects a live HD video feed directly behind your vehicle to your center stack display and includes dynamic grid lines to help with direction and distance to objects in your path. The system works at low speeds when in reverse.

High-Definition Surround Vision

GMC’s High-Definition Surround Vision system uses multiple cameras to render a three-dimensional overhead view surrounding your vehicle. This camera system can help you navigate tight parking spaces or challenging off-road obstacles.

Hitch Guidance With Hitch View

Anyone who tows a trailer will tell you backing up presents one of the most significant challenges, particularly when hitching up. You no longer need a spotter to direct your GMC Sierra 1500 to your trailer if you have Hitch Guidance with Hitch View. This camera system provides video to your center display screen, with dynamic grid lines to help you line up your hitch. Activate the Hitch View to view a close-up video for your final approach.

Once you start driving, you can activate the system to provide a view of your trailer. This view can help tow larger loads with your Sierra 2500 pickup.

Rear Camera Mirror

This system turns your mirror into a video screen using cameras facing behind you to project a more expansive angle view to your rearview mirror. You can toggle back and forth between the camera and the traditional mirror with the touch of a button.

Rear Seat Reminder

Rear Seat Reminder comes standard on most GMC vehicles. The system activates when a rear door opens and closes within 10 minutes of your car starting. Then, when you finish your trip and shut off your vehicle, the system alerts you, reminding you to check the rear seat. You’ll never forget anything in the back seat again.

Teen Driver Technology

You can help your teen driver learn safe driving habits with this available technology. The system allows you to set speed alerts, speed limits, and audio levels. Your GMC driver-assist systems default to On when you activate Teen Driver, and the vehicle won’t start until all passengers fasten their seatbelts.

Current GMC technology offers an elevated driving experience like never before. We invite you to shop our inventory online if you’re interested in upgrading your commute with a new GMC equipped with this technology. Or, if you prefer a personal demonstration, you can visit our Carmel dealership on Route 6 at any time.

When you’re in the market for a new pickup truck, towing capacity is among the essential aspects to consider, if not the most important, whether you’re looking for a work truck to haul equipment from job site to job site or to pull a camper, boat, ATV, or other watercraft for a weekend adventure, or, better yet, both, here’s what to expect for the maximum towing capacities of the GMC Sierra 1500 and 2500 models.

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Towing Capacity

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Towing Capacities

While other factors also affect the maximum towing capacity, the engine is the most crucial consideration. Based on the engine you opt for, the following are the various maximum towing capacities for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 :

  • 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V-6: This is the base engine for the 1500 and features a maximum towing capacity of 7,900 pounds.
  • 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder: A smaller but powerful engine upgrades the maximum towing capacity to 9,200 pounds.
  • 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 AFM: Probably the engine most associated with the 1500, this V-8 engine can tow up to 9,900 pounds.
  • 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 DFM: A variant of the V-8, this engine will up the maximum towing capacity to 11,300 pounds with proper configuration.
  • 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V-8: The souped-up version of the V-8 gets up to 11,800 pounds when properly equipped.
  • 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel: This torque machine can tow up to 9,300 pounds.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500 Towing Capacity

If the GMC Sierra 1500 isn’t enough for your needs, then check out the GMC Sierra HD 2500. The Sierra HD 2500 builds off the lighter-duty Sierra 1500, giving you the same refined interior that people love worldwide. If you need heavy-duty towing and payload capacities, upgrading from a Sierra 1500 to a GMC Sierra HD 2500 is advisable.

You can customize your GMC Sierra HD to suit your needs. Both gas and diesel options are available. The gas engine is a 6.6-liter V-8 engine with 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. The diesel option is a Duramax Turbo-Diesel V-8 engine churning 445 horsepower and a whopping 910 lb-ft of torque.

  • Max GCWR: 27,500 pounds.
  • Max conventional hitch: 18,500 pounds.
  • Max fifth wheel hitch: 18,500 pounds.
  • Max gooseneck hitch: 18,500 pounds.
  • Max payload: 3,597 pounds.

  • Max conventional hitch: 14,500 pounds.

What is Towing Capacity?

Simply put, maximum towing capacity is the maximum weight your vehicle can pull safely and effectively. It changes based on the configuration, the weight the vehicle is already hauling, the distribution of the load, and how you control the load. The manufacturer will list a maximum towing capacity, which is their best estimate based on their testing but doesn’t reflect all situations.

The actual towing capacity requires calculating a variety of factors. The towing capacity assumes a driver and no other passengers or cargo in the bed. That’s not practical in real life, as you’ll most likely have passengers and cargo in the pickup bed, affecting the maximum towing capacity.

To calculate the maximum towing capacity accurately, you must know various factors. The first thing to know is the full gross combined vehicle weight rating (GCVWR), which is the weight of the trailer and vehicle or cargo you plan to tow along with other cargo and passengers you plan to carry. Next, you’ll need to consider the vehicle’s curb weight, including gas at full and all other fluids the vehicle requires.

You’ll determine the vehicle’s towing capacity by subtracting the curb weight from the GCVWR. Manufacturers stress that exceeding the maximum towing capacity is unadvisable, but, in reality, it’s even better to stay no more than 90% of the maximum towing capacity for safety reasons.

General Towing Considerations

You should also know some general towing considerations before discussing towing capacity. First, you need to consider new driving dynamics. Towing involves longer braking distances to slow down and stop, reduced acceleration, and more room to turn. Also, it would be best if you considered the trajectory of your trailer. Most towing issues occur when you back up your trailer because you must reverse your steering to pilot a trailer — turning the wheel left moves the trailer right, and vice versa. Make sure you practice this in a safe area to get it down.

Towing a trailer puts a significant amount of pressure on your truck. Opting for a trailer package will help immensely with stouter suspension and improved cooling, among other additions. The towing package on the AT4 trim will give you the best towing experience available. In addition, you’ll want to consider the tongue weight, which measures the force applied directly to the tow hitch.

If the tongue weight is too light, you may introduce trailer sway, which can be dangerous. If the tongue weight is too high, it’ll affect steering and braking. To tow safely, the tongue weight should check in at about 10% to 15% of your gross trailer weight. No matter the circumstance, you should never exceed the GMC Sierra’s maximum towing capacity, as doing so can be very dangerous. Your owner’s manual will list the maximum towing capacity for your vehicle.

This combination delivers 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque to keep you at the front of the pack. The SLE and SLT come with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and the AT4 and Denali come standard with all-wheel drive.

The 2022 GMC Terrain front-wheel drive options get an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, with the all-wheel drive dropping the highway estimate to 28 mpg. Both will keep you on the road and away from the pump longer, saving you time and money.

You can pack a lot into your Terrain with the 29.6 cubic feet of space behind the second-row seats or the 63.3 cubic feet available when you fold down the rear seats. The 60/40 split-folding rear seat provides endless cargo and passenger configurations to suit all your needs. You’ll also enjoy the fold-flat front seat that gives you even more cargo options.

The GMC Terrain SLE

The SLE is the base model for the 2022 GMC Terrain, but it offers plenty of features to get you started. You also get forward collision mitigation to warn you of an impending frontal collision, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist to help you stay in the correct lane.

The GMC Terrain SLT

Moving up to the SLT trim level adds roof-mounted side rails and a hands-free power programmable liftgate to your Terrain. You also get 18-inch silver-painted aluminum wheels, fog lights, and heated power mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators. You can enjoy remote ignition to start your car before entering to regulate the temperature inside according to outside weather conditions.

The SLT also features a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, and power-adjustable heated front seats with driver’s seat memory functions. It comes with a household-style power outlet, universal garage door opener, additional USB ports, dual-zone climate control, an HD rearview camera, and an 8-inch touchscreen.

The GMC Terrain AT4

If you’re ready to go off-road with your Terrain, the AT4 is the trim for you. This rugged-looking version of the Terrain features underbody skid plates and unique styling cues with 17-inch gloss black aluminum wheels. The AT4 also comes with a perforated leather seat trim with the AT4 logo and optional front sill plates.

The GMC Terrain Denali

The top-of-the-line Denali provides added technology and luxury features to upgrade your ride. The Denali rolls down the road on 19-inch bright machined aluminum wheels with premium dark gray accents, body-color door handles with chrome surround, and body-color lower body trim. Inside, you get an integrated navigation system, Bose premium audio and HD radio, a wireless charging pad, and an upgraded driver information display.

Additional safety and driver-assistance features on the Denali trim include a head-up display to keep your eyes and attention on the road. You also get a blind-spot monitor with a rear cross-traffic alert to tell you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during lane changes or when you have your Terrain in reverse. The front and rear parking sensors help alert you to obstacles you may not see behind or in front of your Terrain. The safety alert seat vibration will warn you when a safety warning is triggered.

Available Add-Ons

You can have a sunroof added to most trims of the 2022 GMC Terrain to let the sunshine in on those beautiful sunny days here in Meadowland. You can also upgrade the Denali with ventilated seats to keep you and your front passenger more comfortable in warmer weather. Additional driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control to help you maintain a set distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. You can also add a surround-view monitor that gives you a top-down view of the vehicle and your surroundings to assist with parking.

Summer has arrived, and with it, the warm weather. The heat makes for great beach days, waterpark fun, and poolside barbecues. Staying cool and having fun is the name of the game. However, that’s hard to do when your car’s air conditioner (AC) malfunctions. Various problems can stop your AC from working correctly. With that in mind, we had our AC experts explain how your car’s AC works and compile a list of warning signs that it might need some help.

GMC Sierra HD interior

Why Is My Car Not Cooling Down?

Vehicle air conditioners employ a complex process to cool the air inside your car. The process involves a chemical reaction with a gaseous refrigerant called freon. Your car’s AC compresses the freon, increasing its temperature. Next, the AC pumps the hot freon through cooling coils that turn it from a gas into a liquid. The liquid then moves through the system, evaporating in a series of coils and getting extremely cold.

The fan system in your car pumps the warm air through these freezing coils, cooling it and returning it to the cabin. The warm air passing through the cold coils causes the freon to heat. This, therefore, requires a constant circulation of freon to maintain cool temperatures inside your vehicle. So, you have two systems constantly working to keep your AC running. Unfortunately, things can go wrong with all these moving parts, leading to the failure of your AC and your car not cooling down.

Signs That Your Car Needs Its AC Refrigerant Replaced

Fortunately, attentive drivers can spot the warning signs of a failing AC unit if they know what to look for.

Gradual Reduction of Cold Air

If your AC never produces cold air, you have a problem. Leaks in the AC system occur over time. Even a minor collision could knock something loose or cause a part to break. Small leaks over time cause the freon level to drop, and less freon results in not enough cool air for maximum performance. As a result, if you have a small leak, you’ll notice gradual warming of the air.

Abrupt Loss of Cold Air

If one day you have cold air and the next none, you could have a large leak, usually resulting from a failed part. Or, you could have a more severe problem with your AC unit. We recommend you bring your car in for service if this happens. Then, our expert technicians can quickly diagnose and fix the problem.

Air Conditioning Clutch Malfunction

Your AC unit uses a clutch to engage the system and create pressure. When you turn on your AC unit, you should hear the clutch engage with a noticeable click. If you don’t hear that and get warm air, you could have a problem with the clutch. The clutch requires freon in the system to engage. Therefore, your clutch not engaging doesn’t always mean failure. You might simply need more freon.

Compressor Failure

Your AC system relies on pressure to compress the freon from a gas into a liquid. A failed compressor can result in warm air flowing through your AC system. A failed compressor doesn’t happen often, but it can occur.

Visible Leaks

A visible freon leak means you have a more serious problem. Freon appears as a thin liquid with a greasy texture. You’ll often spot leaks around the compressor and pooling under the vehicle. In rare cases, freon can even leak into the cabin. We suggest you have our service center technicians inspect your AC system if you spot a leak.

Does Your AC Break More Easily in the Summer?

Our customers often bemoan their misfortune when their car’s AC fails at an inopportune time in the heat of summer. There are several reasons your car’s AC may break more easily in the summer. Most importantly, usage of your AC system rises as the temperatures climb. The more we use a piece of equipment, the more wear and tear that item experiences. Eventually, this can lead to a breakdown. Unfortunately, this happens when you need the AC most. It’s also the case that you don’t use your AC much in the winter. It can’t break down if it’s not used.

Recharging Your AC Unit

We always recommend you have a professional mechanic perform repairs and maintenance. Having a certified technician recharge your AC ensures the job gets done right. Our service department can quickly recharge your AC unit and get you back to your busy life.

However, we respect DIY people and want to help in any way we can. If you enjoy performing routine services, such as recharging your car’s AC, we encourage you to take advantage of our expertise. Our parts center technicians can help you identify the correct parts and even sell you any special tools you might need to get the job done right. In addition, you can conveniently order parts online, and we’ll have them ready for you when you arrive.

How Often Should You Replace or Recharge Your Freon?

No precise answer exists for this question since it depends on the frequency of use and unpredictable circumstances like leaks. We suggest you recharge your freon when you notice a drop in cooling ability. Once recharged, your AC unit will cool the air more quickly. Ignoring the issue could lead to more serious problems, as running your AC with no freon in the system can cause significant damage to the compressor. The cost of replacing your AC compressor can exceed $1,000. Compared to the low cost of recharging, it only makes sense to keep the freon charge.

We understand how much you rely on your AC in the summer months at Meadowland GMC. That’s why we recommend you recharge your AC unit before the season. However, if you experience a drop in cooling performance at any time this summer, we invite you to schedule a service online. Our factory-certified technicians will inspect your AC unit to determine the cause of poor performance. Your technician will explain the problem and outline the process to fix it, including a detailed cost breakdown.

Are you considering trading in your existing car at a dealership before buying a new or used one? It is a sensible step because it can help you to dispose of your old vehicle and use the money you get for it to purchase a replacement. However, to get a fair price for your trade-in, you may need to spend time and conduct research so you can learn how the trade-in process works.

What Does Value Your Trade Mean?
Value Your Trade

Value your trade means getting an accurate appraisal of your old vehicle when you decide to trade it in for a new one. The car dealership that agrees to buy your old car from you will provide you with its valuation. If you find it reasonable and decide to go ahead with the sale, they will provide you with a purchase contract that shows the valuation amount. When you buy a new vehicle from that dealership, they will deduct this amount from the price of your new or used car.

Why Should You Trade In Your Vehicle With a Dealership?

Convenience is why you might want to trade in your old vehicle with a dealership. If you had to sell it on your own, you would have to advertise it at different places, communicate with prospective buyers, make time for test drives, and negotiate the price. Trading your car with a reputed dealer can save you this hassle. It also saves you from shopping around for a new car since you can purchase it from them.

Additionally, you may get a tax advantage on the trade-in in many states. Instead of paying tax on the full purchase price of the new car, you only pay tax on the difference between the trade-in price and the new car price.

Hacks for the Vehicle Trade-In Process

If you are financing your new car, getting more money from trading in your old one can enable you to borrow less on the car loan. Here are some suggestions to get the best offer:

1. Research the Value of Your Trade-In Vehicle

It is necessary to know the existing vehicle’s trade-in value to get a reasonable price for it. That means you must research current market prices for similar models with the same mileage and negotiate the trade-in price separately from the purchase price of a new car. Remember that vehicles start depreciating the moment you drive them out of the dealership’s lot. So, you lose up to 20% on the first day itself, and it decreases steadily from there, with a three-year car depreciating up to 65% of its original value.

That said, when you have a clear idea of what your vehicle is worth, you will know if the dealer is offering you a fair rate for the trade-in, and you may be able to negotiate a better trade-in price.

2. Determine the Condition of Your Trade-In Vehicle

The condition of your trade-in vehicle is a major factor in determining its value. If you have maintained it in top-notch condition and made a few fixes before trading it in, you may be able to negotiate a better price. It is necessary to mention again that, due to depreciation, its current value is likely to be a lot lower than what you originally paid for it.

3. Find Out What the Outstanding Balance Is on Your Current Car

Before you can trade in your old car, you must check if you have negative equity. You can do this by comparing what you owe on the car to its current value. For example, if your outstanding balance on the car loan for the vehicle is $8,000 and the current market value of the car is now $5,000, you have negative equity of $3,000.

If possible, pay off the negative equity before you trade in the car and apply for a new auto loan. You can add the outstanding balance to your new loan, which will increase your monthly premiums.

4. Get Price Estimates From Different Car Dealers

You can get an estimate on your old car from the car dealership from which you want to buy a new one and several other dealers who sell the same car model. For example, if the vehicle is a GMC model, you can ask your local GMC dealership if they are willing to purchase the car from you.

Also, if it is a well-maintained car with low mileage, you can inquire with used car dealers. By getting multiple estimates from different car dealers and comparing those with the car’s current market value, you can select the offer that gives you the best price for your trade-in.

5. Review the Car Trade-In Offers You Receive

Before you agree to any offer on your vehicle, take the time to understand what the trade-in offer entails. Some dealers may offer a specific set price for a trade-in, regardless of the car’s condition. That means even if your vehicle is in poor condition, the price will be the same as for a better quality one.

Other dealers may offer to pay off your outstanding loan on the car if you accept their trade-in offer. Be careful with that one. If you owe a lot, they may add the negative equity to the new car loan you take. So, be very clear about the trade-in details before you accept the deal.

6. Negotiate Your Trade-In Price

Car dealers often start the trade-in deal with a lowball offer. You will need to negotiate a higher amount. While you will not get anywhere close to what you originally paid for the car, you might get a price that matches its current market value. Be aware that some dealers may give you a reasonable price for your old vehicle and then try to make up for it by hiking up the price for the new car you are buying from them.

7. Complete the Trade-In Deal

After you and the car dealer agree to the trade-in price for your old vehicle, you can discuss buying a new car from them. The sales contract should clearly state the trade-in value. You should check if the dealer has deducted this amount from the new car’s price. Clean your vehicle inside and out before you trade in your vehicle.

As you can see, trading in your car can be a simple process if you select a reputed dealer and do your homework beforehand.
