Longer loans have lower monthly payments. As a result, many buyers look to extend the length of their loans to save money each month. You will pay more in interest over the life of a longer loan than shorter-term loans.

Do I Need a Car Loan?

The answer to this question depends on your situation. Not everyone has the cash in hand to purchase a vehicle, and even those that do sometimes opt for a car loan. If you don’t have the money in your bank account, you will need to get a loan if you want a vehicle. We suggest getting preapproved online before you begin shopping.

If you have the money to cover the cost of a car, you don’t need a car loan. You can pay for the vehicle, and it’s yours the moment you drive off the lot. Paying in cash will save thousands of dollars in interest payments and fees over the life of a car loan. Feel free to buy your car with cash if you can afford it.

However, experts don’t recommend depleting your savings for significant purchases unless necessary. If something were to happen and you needed cash quickly, having that money set aside will help.

Car Loan Pros

You will enjoy several benefits if you choose to finance your vehicle. First, you won’t pay as much, if anything, upfront. Typical car loans require some form of downpayment. However, you can trade in your old vehicle and use its value as a downpayment. In this scenario, you won’t have any upfront costs.

If you don’t have much money saved up, financing can allow you to purchase a more expensive car. For example, if you have $10,000 in your savings account, you can only afford a car under $10,000 without a loan. Remember, you must account for taxes, fees, insurance, and registration expenses.

Financing expands your options. For example, if you finance $15,000, you could apply a $5,000 downpayment on a car worth twice that and still have $5,000 left in your nest egg. At a 5% interest rate and a 60-month loan term, you would pay around $283 each month.

Getting a car loan builds equity, which is another excellent benefit. Once you pay off the loan, you own the car. You can continue driving it and enjoy no monthly payments or trade in your vehicle  for a newer model, using its value as a down payment. You can also sell the car and use that cash for other things.

If you pay your loan on time, you also build good credit. Building good credit through a car loan can help you with subsequent loans. The higher your credit score, the lower your interest rate.

Car Loan Cons

When you drive a new car off the lot, it depreciates quickly. Most new models see up to a 30% drop in value in the first year and 10%-15% for each of the next three to four years. This rapid depreciation can lead to owners getting upside down on their car loans. Upside down refers to owing more for your car than its actual value.

Getting upside down won’t automatically affect you negatively. However, you could owe money that insurance won’t cover if you get in an accident. For instance, if you owe $20,000 on your car loan and its actual value is $15,000, if you get in an accident and the insurance company deems the vehicle a total loss, they only pay your lender $15,000.

You would have to pay the remaining $5,000 to satisfy the loan. This expense comes at the worst possible time, as you probably need whatever money you have to put down on another vehicle.

What Is the GMC Elevation Package?

The GMC Elevation package is an enhanced optional trim level for the GMC Sierra and the GMC Canyon. Inspired by the Denali, GMC’s top trim level, GMC has called the Elevation package the gateway to the brand, as it bridges the gap between the entry-level and top-tier Denali models. As the name implies, the Elevation package offers a chance to elevate your experience with many great features without choosing the most expensive trim. Thanks to its rugged off-road capability, the Sierra Elevation is all about conquering the great outdoors.

Key Features of the Sierra Elevation

• MSRP: From $52,000.
• Drivetrain: Rear wheel drive.
• Fuel efficiency: 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

The Sierra Elevation is a luxurious, lightweight pickup truck that’s the most advanced and enhanced in its class. Equipped with a standard 2.7-liter turbo high-output engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it produces 310 horsepower and sends 430 pound-feet of torque to the wheels. Alternatively, you can rev up your Elevation with the available 5.3-liter V-8 gas engine or the enhanced 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine. The latter boasts a 10-speed automatic transmission and best-in-class diesel horsepower and torque.

Exterior Design

The Sierra Elevation has a fully boxed frame and comes in Crew Cab and Double Cab versions. You can take your pick between two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations. The former can be equipped with a short bed and a short or standard bed. Building on top of the base level of most GMC trucks, the Elevation boasts an array of enhanced exterior features that make it stand out in a crowd. These include 20-inch high-gloss black aluminum wheels and a black front grille mesh insert. It also has body-colored bumpers and monochromatic door handles.

The Elevation boasts heated power outside mirrors and a six-function MultiPro tailgate. There’s an array of features for enhanced performance in all driving conditions. You can expect standard four-wheel antilock disc brakes and an aluminized stainless-steel muffler and tailpipe. Additional features include a heavy-duty 730 cold-cranking amps battery, a high-capacity suspension package, and an automatic locking rear differential. For lighting, it showcases IntelliBeam auto high beams, LED daytime running lamps, and LED fog lamps.

Interior Comfort

The Sierra Elevation has a spacious and comfortable interior for up to six passengers, depending on your chosen configuration. Drivers can enjoy 10-way power and heated driver seats with power lumbar support, a manual tilt, and a telescoping steering column. There’s also a heated steering wheel with mounted controls, a rear window defogger, and cruise control for driving comfort. Passengers have a four-way manual front passenger seat, rear air vents, and heated front passenger seats. The back has plenty of flexibility with a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat with under-seat storage and a 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat.

It also comes with Remote Start capability and three years of complimentary OnStar and Connected Services with Wi-Fi hotspot capability.

Safety Features

The GMC Sierra Elevation comes with GMC Pro Safety as standard. It includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, and front pedestrian braking. Other safety features include  Buckle to Drive and a following distance indicator. When you are hauling, safety features like hitch guidance, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, and a tire pressure monitoring system with a tire fill alert all offer peace of mind.

The Canyon Elevation has the same 2.7-liter turbo high-output engine as the Sierra Elevation, which produces 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. While it still features many of the same dark accents, the Canyon’s exterior differs slightly. It features 18-inch multispoke Satin Graphite aluminum wheels, all-season blackwall tires, and a black grille with a body-colored surround. Inside, drivers and passengers can enjoy the convenience of an 11.3-inch touchscreen and an 8-inch driver information system.

The Canyon Elevation also comes with an off-road performance display. With a high-definition rear-vision camera and a hitch view, it’s ideal for adventuring off-road. They also come in packs, so you can stock up in case your battery dies again.

Gather Tools

Replacing your battery is fairly easy, and you don’t need anything too complicated. All you need is a small flathead screwdriver. If you don’t have one, you can use a coin to open the key fob.

Remove the Back Cover

Carefully pry open the back cover of your key fob using a flathead screwdriver. There should be a small slot on the side of the fob where you can insert the screwdriver and twist it to separate the fob into two halves. Be careful not to force the panel, as this could cause it to break. It should pop apart easily.

Remove and Replace the Old Battery

Once you’ve taken off the back cover, take a look at whether the positive side of the battery is facing up or down before you remove it. This will tell you how to replace it. Once you’ve taken note, you can remove the dead battery from its housing and replace it with a new battery. Make sure that the positive side is facing you or is toward the back panel of the fob.

Replace the Cover

Once you’ve settled the new battery in its correct position, you can line up the two halves of the key fob and push them back together. You should hear a soft click when it’s locked correctly.

Test the Fob

After following the steps above to replace your battery, your key fob should work. If it doesn’t, try each step again and make sure that you’ve positioned the battery’s polarity correctly. If you’ve repeated the process and it still won’t work, it’s likely not a battery issue.

Other Things To Check if the Problem Isn’t the Battery

If replacing your battery using the steps above doesn’t fix the issue, another problem may be affecting your GMC key fob. Usually, this means there’s an issue with the fob itself or your vehicle’s electronics. Here are some things to try:

• Reassemble the key fob: Make sure that you’ve properly reassembled the key fob after replacing the battery. Check that you’ve aligned the two halves correctly and that they’re snapped securely into place. 
• Check for damage: Examine your key fob for any physical damage. You may need to replace it if it’s cracked, it’s water-damaged, or it has a broken button.
• Check the buttons: Sometimes, the button contacts within the key fob can wear out. If you’re handy with electronics, you can try carefully cleaning or resoldering the contacts.

When both features activate, you’ll find an amber warning symbol flashing as an additional warning not to change lanes. You also have the option to turn off the Lane Change Alert from your infotainment system screen in the Vehicle Personalization menu.

IntelliBeam Auto High-Beam Control

IntelliBeam can turn your vehicle’s high beams on and off automatically, depending on the surrounding traffic conditions. It uses a sensor located at the top center of the windshield to turn on your vehicle’s high-beam headlamps when it’s dark enough in the absence of traffic and then turns them off when conditions change. You can disable the feature using the High/Low-Beam Changer or the Flash-to-Pass feature.

Rear Park Assist

The GMC Rear Park Assist notifies you of nearby detected vehicles when you’re in reverse. This feature uses multiple ultrasonic sensors located on the rear bumper of the vehicle to prevent collisions. The sensors may detect objects up to 8 feet behind your vehicle when backing up at low speeds. You can turn the feature on and off using the Rear Park Assist system control or your vehicle’s settings menu.

Forward Collision Alert

Forward Collision Alert warns you if it detects a potential collision with a vehicle. The feature uses a forward-looking camera or camera and radar sensors to identify front-end collisions. You may also receive a tailgating alert if you’re following a vehicle much too closely. If you’re approaching a vehicle that’s ahead of you too quickly risking a potential crash, the system will flash a red collision alert on the lower windshield, along with eight high-pitched front beeps.

Front Pedestrian Braking

Front Pedestrian Braking, available at speeds between 5 and 50 mph, is an active safety feature that helps you avoid or reduce the severity of a front-end collision with a pedestrian or a cyclist. This feature has limited nighttime and low-visibility performance and works better in the daytime. Your vehicle may automatically apply hard emergency braking when it’s about to crash into a pedestrian ahead of it. Depending on the selected alert type, you may hear high-pitched front beeps or both-side Safety Alert Seat pulses.

Safety Alert Seat

The Safety Alert Seat feature uses left, right, or both-side driver seat vibration pulses to get your immediate attention in case of a potential threat. You can sense vibrations on your seat’s bottom cushion as crash avoidance system alerts. This feature works together with other collision-avoidance warning technologies in your vehicle. Other driver-assist technologies, including Forward Collision Alert, Rear Park Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, can activate this feature.

Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert

The Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert feature notifies you of moving vehicles in the side-blind zone to help you avoid lane change collisions. You can turn on the feature by enabling Lane Change Alert through the Settings menu when you attach a trailer to your vehicle. This will disable the regular Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert feature, and you’ll only be able to use the Trailer Side Blind Zone feature. You can easily input the trailer length as part of the trailer profile in the Trailering App.

The feature may also light up a warning indicator in the presence of nonmoving objects, such as guardrails, signboards, and trees.

Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking

The Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking helps you reduce or avoid the severity of an intersection collision when it detects a cross-traffic vehicle. This feature uses a camera to look ahead of your vehicle in forward gear and monitor cross-traffic vehicles. During a potential collision where a detected vehicle is approaching from the right or left side too quickly, the feature provides a flashing collision alert along with front left or front right beeps. The feature may automatically apply hard emergency braking or enhance your hard braking if you fail to act swiftly or if the situation arises suddenly.
