If you’re looking for a large SUV that offers your family maximum safety, you should definitely consider the 2023 GMC Yukon. Due to its massive size and weight and rugged construction, this full-size SUV does a remarkable job of protecting you and your passengers from injuries in the event of a collision. Its heavy body also enables it to stay well-planted around turns and on winding roads, minimizing your rollover risk. Check out this detailed guide to learn more about the weight and dimensions of the latest GMC Yukon.
How Much Does a 2023 GMC Yukon Weigh?
The curb weight of the 2023 GMC Yukon may vary depending on the body length and trim level you choose. The SLE, SLT, and Denali trims of the standard-length Yukon have a curb weight of 5,356 pounds, while the off-road-oriented AT4 and range-topping Denali Ultimate come in at 5,544 pounds. In contrast, the longer Yukon XL is slightly heavier, weighing 5,503 pounds in the SLE, SLT, and Denali configurations and 5,718 pounds in the AT4 and Denali Ultimate versions. At these weight levels, the GMC SUV is one of the heaviest mainstream SUVs on the market.
How Long Is the GMC Yukon?
Regardless of which trim level you choose, the 2023 GMC Yukon has an overall length of 210 inches. Additionally, it’s 81 inches wide without the side mirrors and 76.5 inches tall, making it a well-proportioned vehicle. It rides on a wheelbase that measures 120.9 inches long. The Yukon XL has the same width and height as the regular Yukon but is 225.2 inches long and comes with a 134.1-inch wheelbase.
How Much Space Do Passengers Get Inside the GMC Yukon?
Since it’s a large vehicle, the new GMC Yukon offers plenty of space for you and your family. With a total passenger volume of 178 cubic feet, it can comfortably accommodate up to eight people in three rows of seats. Opting for the popular second-row captain’s chairs reduces the capacity to seven.
Front passengers can stretch out with 44.5 inches of legroom, 42.3 inches of headroom, 66 inches of shoulder room, and 61.5 inches of hip room. The second-row seats are slightly less roomy, offering 42 inches of legroom, 38.9 inches of headroom, 64.8 inches of shoulder room, and 61.3 inches of hip room. Unlike some three-row SUVs that have cramped rear seats, this GMC model comes with adult-friendly third-row seats that provide 34.9 inches of legroom, 38.2 inches of headroom, 62.7 inches of shoulder room, and 49.4 inches of hip room.
The seating dimensions of the GMC Yukon remain the same regardless of the trim level or body length. With such spacious seats, this SUV can keep you and your passengers comfortable and relaxed even after hours of driving.
How Much Cargo Space Do You Get With the GMC Yukon?
If you enjoy going on road trips with your family or need to transport a lot of freight, you’ll appreciate the vast cargo area of the GMC Yukon. Leaving all three rows of seats upright gives you 25.5 cubic feet of storage space, while folding the rearmost seats yields 72.6 cubic feet. If that’s not enough, lay down the second-and third-row seats to achieve the maximum capacity of 122.9 cubic feet. This puts the Yukon among the cargo space leaders in the full-size SUV segment.
The extended length of the GMC Yukon XL translates to a larger cargo hold. This version offers 41.5 cubic feet behind the third row, 93.8 cubic feet behind the second row, and a whopping 144.7 cubic feet behind the third row. There’s ample room for dozens of carry-on suitcases or bulky items such as sports equipment, camping gear, home improvement supplies, and school projects.
Do the Size and Weight of the GMC Yukon Affect Its Performance?
Larger vehicles are generally more challenging to maneuver, so they can be somewhat cumbersome to drive. However, this isn’t the case with the 2023 GMC Yukon. With its light and precise steering, the Yukon is able to easily negotiate congested traffic and parking lots, making it an excellent choice for urban dwellers. Furthermore, it delivers a smooth and composed ride over uneven surfaces and around corners, thanks to its compliant suspension. Overall, this GMC offers better handling than most of its rivals.
Despite its hefty weight, the GMC Yukon feels surprisingly energetic. This is because of its powerful engine lineup, which includes the base 5.3-liter V-8 with 355 horsepower, a 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower, and a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 with 460 lb-ft of torque. When fitted with the larger V-8, this SUV can accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in a mere 6 seconds. That’s faster than many cars and smaller SUVs.
If you intend to tow heavy loads, choose a model with the turbo-diesel unit, which is rated to tow up to 8,400 pounds when properly equipped. Maximum payload capacity stands at 2,044 pounds.
Compared to other full-size SUVs, the GMC Yukon provides decent fuel economy. It gives you 15/20 mpg (city/highway) with its standard engine and 14/20 mpg with the optional V-8. The turbo-diesel engine is the best option to save money at the gas station, as it earns an impressive 21/27 mpg with rear-wheel drive and 20/26 mpg with rear four-wheel drive.

Does the 2023 GMC Terrain Have Third-Row Seating?
The 2023 GMC Terrain is a midsized SUV with seating for five people over two rows. No third row is available for this model year. This Terrain comes in four trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali. The GMC Acadia is ideal for larger families or carpoolers who need that extra row of seating. Thankfully, the 2023 GMC Terrain has entertainment, convenience, and comfort features that set it apart from the pack. We’ll cover those in detail for you here.
Entertainment Features That Make Every Drive a Blast
The 2023 GMC Terrain’s list of standard entertainment features is truly impressive for an SUV of its size. They include a Wi-Fi hotspot for handy and stable internet access, a six-speaker sound system, and a 7-inch diagonal GMC Infotainment System with a multi-touch display. Multi-touch means that the system can track more than one touch simultaneously, something many infotainment systems can’t do. The infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto programming. The system supports wireless versions of both programs. It also includes Bluetooth phone programming and Bluetooth streaming audio service.
Phone programming is universal, but the streaming audio service is limited to specific phone manufacturers and models. Your GMC dealer can tell you whether your phone is compatible with the system. SiriusXM satellite radio Platinum is the show’s real star in terms of standard entertainment features in this SUV. It includes 150 channels, commercial-free music streaming, newscasts, and entertainment programming. You’ll also gain access to the SiriusXM Platinum App, so you can access all of its features even when you’re not on the road.
Optional entertainment features in the 2023 GMC Terrain include an 8-inch version of the infotainment system with advanced voice recognition programming. You can program this upgraded version of the infotainment system with personalized profiles for your vehicle and infotainment settings, making it ideal for households with more than one driver. You can also upgrade the sound system to a premium Bose version with seven speakers, which adds an amplifier to the center console. GMC Connected Navigation services are also available, providing real-time updates on fuel prices, traffic conditions, parking availability, and points of interest.
A Superior Antenna for Premium Performance
The world’s fancy radio programming is useless without a solid antenna to draw data through. The 2023 GMC Terrain comes with an excellent shark-fin antenna. This form of antenna is known for its high performance and dependability in relation to simultaneous data transfer, communication, and GPS navigation. It also has an exceptionally long life span and is impressively durable.
Comfort Features That Make Every Drive a Breeze
The five seats in the 2023 GMC Terrain come upholstered with premium cloth material in Jet Black or Medium Ash Gray and Jet Black. An upgrade to Light Platinum and Dark Galvanized upholstery colors and perforated leather-appointed upholstery are also available. This upgrade comes with special Denali badges at the Denali trim level.
Four-way manually adjustable bucket seats are standard for the front row, but you can upgrade them to six-way or eight-way power-adjustable versions with two-way power-adjustable lumbar supports. The rear seat bench is available with a center armrest. Comfort options in the 2023 GMC Terrain include a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and dual-zone automatic climate control with independent controls for each front-row occupant. Single-zone automatic climate control comes standard.
Convenience Features That Make Every Drive Satisfying
Standard convenience features in the 2023 GMC Terrain include express up-and-down power windows, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a 12-volt DC power outlet, a pair of convenient seat releases on the back of the rear-bench seating, a compass display, an overhead compartment for sunglass storage, an extended range remote keyless open fob, and two USB ports for each row.
The driver information center covers the status of 26 systems, including fuel range and tank fill level, two-trip computer displays, and average vehicle speed and the related fuel economy. The cruise control system has set-and-resume speed programming capabilities, and the steering wheel features an inlaid audio system and phone controls.
GMC Connected Access Features
All trim levels of the 2023 GMC Terrain are available with GMC Connected Services programming. This programming suite provides monthly GMC vehicle diagnostic reports, so you can spot irregularities and have them serviced before they become expensive issues. It also grants you access to the GMC Smart Driver system, which gives you tips on how to improve your driving based on your vehicle operation patterns over time.
This impressive SUV is also available with three years of OnStar service, so you can call for aid with a button push when needed. The OnStar system includes vehicle security, remote diagnostics, GPS navigation, and communication features. You can buy subscription extensions through us at our dealership in Carmel, New York.

Save on Your Auto Maintenance Costs in Carmel
We’re always updating our service coupons, so it’s important to check back often to make sure you catch the best deals. Our incentives cover the full range of car maintenance services, from oil changes to tire rotations, brake work, and battery installations. The offers may include discounts on the labor in our service center, free inspections, or reductions in the price of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts from our GMC parts department.
We can carry out a multi-point inspection whenever you stop by for a maintenance appointment. These inspections allow one of our professional mechanics to identify potential problems with different parts of your vehicle before they get serious. Our inspections always include different levels of recommendations, including issues that require immediate attention and things that you should monitor and get resolved soon. If something needs dealing with right away, we can take care of it for you.
Benefits of Regular Vehicle Maintenance
We hope our service coupons will encourage you to carry out regular car maintenance at our Carmel service center. There are many benefits to having your sedan, truck, or SUV examined by a professional auto technician. These regular appointments allow us to handle maintenance tasks that will help your vehicle perform its best in the months and years ahead. These tasks include engine oil and filter changes, fluid top-ups, brake pad replacements, and wheel alignments.
Improved performance can mean better fuel economy, nimble handling around corners, and stronger acceleration. For example, when you change your engine oil, you help your engine run more smoothly. The reduced resistance between the engine’s components means less energy is required to generate the power needed to accelerate your car, which helps ensure an improved fuel economy. In contrast, a poorly maintained engine with old oil can use up more fuel and suffer more wear and tear.
A routine maintenance schedule also gives you a chance to perform preventative maintenance. This is when we take action to resolve a problem, such as a worn brake pad or a damaged hose, before it causes extensive damage to other components. Over the long term, preventative maintenance saves you money because it reduces the risk of expensive repairs. For example, promptly replacing your brake pads is more affordable than paying for new rotors and calipers that have suffered damage because you let your brake pads get completely worn.
Routine maintenance is also critical for your safety. Over time, your tires and brake pads wear down, and engine oil deteriorates. Driving a vehicle with worn tires or brake pads can cause an immediate safety hazard, such as preventing you from stopping in time to avoid an accident.
If you stick to a maintenance regime, one of our mechanics will be able to let you know when your tires or brake pads are worn, and other key components need replacing. Performing these tasks on time significantly reduces the risks you’ll experience when driving on the road.
Finally, routine maintenance can benefit you when it comes time to sell your car. Your vehicle may be eligible for a certified pre-owned program if you can prove to the dealership that it has a full maintenance record. Certified pre-owned vehicles typically sell for higher prices, which means more money in your pocket. Even if you sell your car on the private market, you’re more likely to get a good offer if your vehicle seems in good condition.

Our dealership financing team is a group of dedicated individuals who work hard to help you get the very best financing options for your vehicle. They’ll design your lease or sale contract, help you with the paperwork, explain your options, and arrange to finance. Our financing team takes care of everything so you can focus on what’s important — choosing the right vehicle for you and your family at the right price. Read on to learn how our financing team will work for you, including qualifying for new car financing, securing auto loans, and arranging a vehicle lease.
Leasing a Vehicle
Leasing a vehicle is very similar to renting or borrowing one. During the lease period, you make payments that apply toward the depreciation of the vehicle’s value. Because of this, you typically pay less per month to lease a car than to buy a new one. At the end of your lease period, you can purchase the vehicle if you love it or turn it in if you’re ready for something new.
Leasing is a good option for many people. Suppose you’d like to have lower monthly payments than buying a car or always prefer to drive a vehicle under warranty. In that case, leasing might be the right choice for you. Leasing will also allow you to get a new car every couple of years with the latest technology and safety features. Because you need to keep the vehicle in good condition, leasing is often a good option for people who are happy to keep up with vehicle cleaning and maintenance.
Our dealership financing team can sit with you and explain your lease options and terms. Once you’re comfortable with the terms of your lease, we’ll go through the paperwork with you so you can get on the road as quickly as possible.
Purchasing a Vehicle
If leasing isn’t right for you and you’re ready to buy a new or used car, our dealership financing team can help you there too. We can help you with every step, from pre-qualifying for a loan to understanding your terms and signing the paperwork.
Get Pre-qualified or Pre-approved for a Car Loan
We’re happy to help you with pre-qualifying or pre-approval for your car loan. You can start this no-obligation process anytime, even before deciding what car you want. Knowing your budget ahead of time might help you choose which vehicles to look at. To get pre-qualified, you start with a quick application and a credit check that does not affect your credit score. We’ll let you know what you may qualify for, including the total amount and interest rate.
The pre-approval process is similar. However, the pre-approval application will reflect on your credit score, so it might be better to wait until you’ve decided on which vehicle you want to buy. We work hard to get the best rates for you and try to make the process as smooth as possible to help you enjoy buying your car. We’ll explain all of the details and answer any questions so you can make an informed decision.

Trucks are highly practical vehicles that are ideal for tackling life’s weighty chores and off-road adventures. And GMC makes some of the best and most reliable trucks for exactly these purposes. That’s why today, we’re dedicating our attention to six practical tasks that a GMC truck can accomplish with ease.
Hauling
If there’s ever been a time when you wanted to buy a new couch, haul some trash to the local dump, or load your vehicle up with bulky sports equipment, you know how much easier a truck makes these types of jobs. While SUVs often have enough cargo space to fit a small cabinet, a load of hockey gear, or a pile of recyclables, stacking these bulky and sometimes dirty items inside your car isn’t ideal because they can damage the upholstery and paneling.
The storage capabilities of a pickup truck’s bed make these types of chores and activities so much easier and cleaner. You can toss a pile of construction debris in the back, knowing that you can easily clean it out with a hose when you’re finished. You can also fit large pieces of furniture without worrying about them ripping the ceiling upholstery or scratching the interior paneling. Getting a truck such as the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 makes it a breeze to haul everyday items, and it offers more cargo bed volume than any of its competitors.
Towing
It’s hard to find a better vehicle for towing than a pickup truck. Whether you want to hitch up a fifth wheel to elevate your camping trips or pull your deck boat to the lake for a day on the water, trucks make the work of towing so much easier. Most trucks come with a range of towing capacities, making them useful for attaching lightweight gear such as jet skis as well as heavier items such as luxury mobile suites or toy haulers.
Pickup trucks also offer a smoother ride while towing because of their larger towing capacities. For example, with a truck such as GMC’s heavy-duty Sierra HD, which offers an astounding 36,000-pound towing capacity, you can tow even the most burdensome cargo with ease.
Construction
There’s a reason pretty much every construction worker in the country uses a pickup truck. Construction work puts a host of demands on a vehicle, and the durability, towing capacity, and cargo capabilities of a truck make that work easier and, dare we say it, even more enjoyable.
What’s more, a number of accessories on the market are made specifically for pickup trucks and allow you to turn your truck into a mobile workshop. From tonneau covers that keep your construction materials safe in the bed of your pickup to truck toolboxes and ladder racks that can help you organize and haul more of your equipment, construction work and pickup trucks are undoubtedly a match made in heaven.
Off-Roading
We all know that work is important. But trucks have plenty of other uses that are less occupational and more recreational. We also know what they say about all work and no play, and we wholly endorse using your truck to have a little fun, too.
Moreso than other types of vehicles, trucks often have the height, drivetrain, and suspension capabilities to go off-road. You can also modify your truck to make off-roading a safer and more secure activity. For example, you can raise your truck’s suspension, outfit it with all-terrain tires, and install a winch on the front bumper. Choosing GMC gets you ahead from the start since it makes some of the best off-roading trucks available with its line of AT4 vehicles, specifically engineered to conquer even the most rugged of landscapes.
Camping
Whether you’re living it up in a spacious fifth wheel or going primitive with a tent and some camping supplies, spending time in the outdoors is undoubtedly better with a truck. You can use the bed of the truck to haul messy camping supplies, such as tarps, water containers, and dirty hiking boots, and you can make use of your vehicle’s towing capabilities to haul a trailer. If you want to outfit your truck for even greater convenience, you can install a camper cover over the bed and turn the truck itself into your accommodation.
Plus, you can tackle all sorts of terrain and weather with the off-roading capabilities of a truck. With four-wheel drive, elevated suspension, and various drive modes suited to different terrains, you’ll find it much easier to get to the remote, middle-of-the-wilderness spots that we believe are the most fun (and beautiful) to camp at.
Generating Power
While this practical use is still in its early stages, we’re very excited about the power-generating capabilities of future electric trucks. And there’s no flagbearer for electric vehicle (EV) trucks that is more impressive than the 2024 Sierra EV. Outfitted with bi-directional charging and the onboard Power Station Pro, the Sierra EV will have the capability to power your tools, electronics, another vehicle, and even essential appliances in your home.
After this truck’s release, you’ll no longer need to lug a bulky, smelly generator around with you when you go on camping adventures. Your truck will be its own power generator, and that power will go wherever you go.
If it isn’t clear yet, we at Meadowland GMC in Carmel, New York, are big fans of the truck, especially ones that bear GMC’s distinctive red logo on their grille. Whatever you want to do, from work to play, we believe you can accomplish it in a truck. If you’d like to learn more about everything, you can do with one of GMC’s diverse and powerful line of pickup trucks, come and pay us a visit.
We love talking all things truck-related, and we’re enthusiastic about pairing our customers with the vehicle that’s best suited to them, their family needs, and their lifestyle.

American artist Maira Kalman once said, “A visit to a museum is a search for beauty, truth, and meaning in our lives,” encouraging people to “go as often as you can.” If you follow her advice, Danbury is the place to do it. The city has several fascinating museums that offer a glimpse into our past. We encourage you to step back in time at these excellent local museums.
Danbury Railway Museum
Housed in the former Danbury Union Station, the Danbury Railway Museum celebrates the local area’s history as a rail transport hub. Visitors can marvel at historic trains, including Budd Rail diesel cars, a former New Haven Railroad class caboose, and passenger cars dating back to the 1920s. There are also fascinating train artifacts on-site, including railroad timetables, photographs of trains at work, and books documenting railway history. Visit between April and November to ride the Railyard Local. Special Pumpkin Patch and Santa trains also run during the holiday seasons.
Location: 120 White St., Danbury. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Cost: $7 admission, free for children under 3, with train rides charged extra.
Danbury Museum and Historical Society
Danbury Museum and Historical Society is four museums in one. John & Mary Rider House, John Dodd Hat Shop, Marian Anderson Studio, and Little Red Schoolhouse conveniently share a campus. Each building features artifacts relevant to the site. As you pour over them, you’ll learn more about Danbury’s role in the Revolutionary War, its historic hatting industry, early schooling, and one of the city’s most beloved operatic talents. Feel free to explore the museum at your leisure, take a self-guided tour by scanning the QR code outside Huntington Hall, or book a guided tour on Friday or Saturday.
Location: 43 Main St., Danbury. Hours: Noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Cost: Free.
Brookfield Museum and Historical Society
Brookfield Museum and Historical Society aims to preserve the history of this Connecticut town, located around 12 minutes northeast of Danbury. It welcomes visitors to browse the museum and library. There’s also a research center on-site with a fascinating collection of maps, deeds, newspapers, photographs, and old tax records from the Brookfield area. Make sure you stop to admire the gardens before you leave.
Location: 165 Whisconier Road, Brookfield. Hours: Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Cost: Free, but donations are welcome.
Keeler Tavern Museum
The Keeler Tavern Museum protects the historic Keeler Tavern and helps visitors understand its significance to the community of Ridgefield, which is located about 20 minutes south of Danbury. The museum shares the history of the tavern and town through memorabilia from the Keeler, Resseguie, and Gilbert families. Historic furnishings, an original engraving of the Battle of Ridgefield, and the first T. Keeler’s Inn sign are among the museum’s treasures. The walled gardens, which are always free for the public, are some of the area’s best.
Location: 152 Main St., Ridgefield. Hours: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Cost: $15 for adults, $12 for seniors aged 65+, and $5 for children aged 18 and under, students, teachers, and veterans. Ticket prices include a guided tour, the Carriage Barn exhibits, and gardens and grounds access. $5 exhibit-only tickets are also available.
The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum
While delving into centuries-old history is exciting, some local museums offer a glimpse into the more recent past. Local collector and fashion designer Larry Aldrich founded The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, also in Ridgefield, in 1964. It’s Connecticut’s only contemporary art museum and the oldest in the country. It hosts exhibitions rather than displaying a permanent collection, so there’s always something new to see. While some feature current artists, others showcase works from the mid-to-late 20th century. Seeing the evolution of art through its diverse pieces is fascinating for anyone interested in this visual medium.
Location: 258 Main St., Ridgefield. Hours: Noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Cost: $15 for adults, $9 for seniors aged 60+ and students, and free for museum members, teachers, children under 13, and military families. The museum also opens free to everyone on the third Saturday of each month.
Northrop House Museum
Experience how one of Sherman’s most prominent families lived at the building that is now the Northrop House Museum, located 25 minutes north of Danbury. David Northrop Jr., a representative in the state legislature, built the property in 1829. He lived here with his father, David Northrop, Sherman’s first town clerk, and later his son, David Ward Northrop. The youngest Northrop became Secretary of State and the mayor and postmaster of Middletown. See the second-floor ballroom and the cow barn before following in the Northrops’ footsteps on the walking track.
Location: 10 Route 37 Center, Sherman. Hours: By appointment, May through October. Cost: Free.
The Old Store Museum and Gift Shop
Even before Sherman was a recognized town, it had The Old Store. David Northrop Jr. built the store before 1802 for the area’s growing population. It was subsequently traded until the Herman Historical Society purchased it in 1998 and transformed it into a museum. There may be no more fitting place to tell the story of Sherman’s history. Browse the Native American artifacts and old photos documenting the town’s evolution. The on-site gift shop maintains the site’s retail tradition.
Location: 10 Route 37 Center, Sherman. Hours: Noon to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday, April through December. Cost: Free.
Wilton Historical Society
For your final history fix, drive to Wilton, which is around 30 minutes south of Danbury. It’s home to the Wilton Historical Society, which features six historic sites. Betts-Sturgis-Blackmar House and Sloan-Raymond-Fitch House are properties that belonged to notable Wilton residents. You can also see the Burn Barn Gallery, Abbott Barn, a blacksmith shop, and a two-seat privy. Kids will love the opportunity to touch everything in the interactive “Just Like Grandma Used to Make” display.
Location: 224 Danbury Road, Wilton. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday during the Great Trains Holiday Show. Cost: Free.
These are the museums the Meadowland GMC team revisits time and time, but we’d love to know about you. Have we missed any of your favorites around Danbury? Contact us or visit our Carmel dealership to let us know.
As we inch closer to the advent of eco-friendly electric vehicles (EVs), more and more automakers are beginning to dedicate resources to make them a reality. And as emission norms become more stringent, General Motors (GM) is leading the charge among its peers and taking strides in ensuring that its focus on eco-friendly technology will reach greater heights.
General Motors has recently made major announcements concerning its EV plans and strategy, most notably Ultium’s EV architecture. Ultium’s platform is a significant step for the company in its rich history of producing reliable, innovative, and efficient vehicles. It’ll bring more technology to the cabin and bring forth a new era of electrified vehicles.
GM plans to transition its entire lineup from gas-powered vehicles to electric, and it is well on its way to making this a reality. It plans to launch several EV models over the next few years and has a production target of about 30 EVs by 2025. Here’s your inside scoop on what GM has in store for future EVs.
The Ultium Battery System
Ultium is a cutting-edge technology that will be used in GM’s upcoming EVs. It consists of large-format pouch-style cells that can be arranged in various modules depending on the vehicle’s needs. And owing to its modularity, it allows for more design flexibility and scalability. The battery setup is paired with GM’s Ultifi software operating system and Vehicle Intelligence Platform electrical architecture, enabling advanced safety features and improved performance capabilities. Here’s what the Ultium battery offers:
Increased Range: GM’s 24-cell Ultium battery module has a total capacity of 8.9 kWh, so a six-module pack will offer 50-kWh usable capacity for the lightest EVs. This translates to a maximum range of up to 400 miles on a single charge. And with its 200-kWh battery pack, GM’s upcoming GMC Hummer EV will have an EPA-estimated range of 329 miles on a single charge.
Cost Efficiency: Ultium batteries are smartly designed and use state-of-the-art Nickel Cobalt Manganese Aluminum (NCMA) chemistry, which is cheaper than the traditional Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion battery cells. This means that GM’s EVs will have a lower cost of ownership than their gas-powered counterparts. In fact, GM has dropped pack-level costs to nearly $100/kWh, which is a significant step in making Ultium products profitable.
Unique Cell design: Ultium uses large 23 by 4 by 0.4-inch pouch-type cells, which can be arranged vertically or horizontally, depending on the vehicle design and application needs, allowing for more energy to be stored more densely in less space. This will also allow GM to create EV models with unique body shapes and sizes.
Wireless Battery Management: The Ultium battery system also features Wireless Battery Management capabilities, which allow for improved diagnostics and communication between the battery and the vehicle. This technology uses Bluetooth-like 2.4-GHz spectrum to monitor the battery’s health, temperature, and state of charge. This technology also helps reduce costs, reduce weight, and make the system less complex.
High Charging Speeds: Ultium allows for higher charging speeds than traditional lithium-ion batteries, capable of DC fast charging up to 250 kW. The cell design also allows battery modules to be wired in series, which helps enable it to emulate 800-volt systems when needed. This, in turn, allows 100 miles of range to be replenished in just 10 minutes of charging.
EV Products in the Pipeline
GMC is already leading the charge in EVs with its Bolt EV, continuing to expand its lineup with more EVs. GM has set an ambitious goal of selling one million EVs a year by 2025, and it’s looking to achieve this with its upcoming fleet of EVs. GMC’s upcoming HUMMER EV pickup and SUV will offer an exceptional balance of zero emissions, performance, and capability.
GM is also set to release the Cadillac LYRIQ soon, the company’s first all-electric premium luxury SUV. It’ll be built on the Ultium platform and feature up to 300 miles of range, GM’s Super Cruise driver assist system, and a host of cutting-edge technology. The LYRIQ will also be built on a modular platform, which means it can easily be adapted to other vehicle types, such as sedans and crossovers.
Charging Infrastructure
GM’s plans also include a major focus on improving charging infrastructure both at home and publicly. GM has partnered with EVgo to create America’s world’s largest public fast-charging network. This includes more than 2,700 DC fast chargers that can charge up to 350 kW of power, which is twice as much as current DC fast chargers. This will allow drivers to charge their EVs faster and go further on a single charge.
GM is also building up its own Level 2 charging network at home and in the workplace, allowing drivers to charge their EVs from anywhere. Qmerit, a service provider in the automotive industry, has been tapped to install new charging solutions for GM’s EVs and ensure that drivers have access to charging points from convenient locations.
What the Future Holds
GM is set on leading the EV revolution and has made significant research and development investments. It will continue to invest in developing new battery technologies and further improving its E-Flex platform, which is the foundation of many of its future EVs. GM’s goal is to have 20+ new EVs announced by 2023, and it’s on track to meet that goal.
With GM’s focus on EV technology and infrastructure, other automakers are sure to follow suit in the near future. This means that the world of transportation will be revolutionized — for the better. Faster charging times, improved range, and lower prices will make EVs a much more attractive option for drivers. The future of transportation is here — and GM is leading the way.
GM’s EV efforts constitute a significant step in the right direction, and we can look forward to more exciting developments soon. With its Ultium battery system and comprehensive charging infrastructure, GM is paving the way for a greener future. These efforts will help reduce emissions, improve air quality, and drive down costs while simultaneously creating an enjoyable experience for drivers. It’s never been easier to go electric with GM.
