Biking is a great way to exercise, spend time outside, and visit local sites. There are many biking trails in and around the Carmel area, and you can find them for all biking levels. Whether you're just getting on two wheels and want to do some sightseeing or like the challenge of mountain biking, here's where you can find some of the most scenic biking trails near Carmel. Fahnestock State Park Fahnestock State Park is a beautiful park and an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The 14,086-acre park has plenty of biking trails, whether you want an easy scenic ride or to tackle the mountain biking trails. Fahnestock Trail: This trail is good for mountain biking, hiking, and trail running. It has a green rating, making it one of the easier mountain biking trails in the park. Hubbard Loop: This trail is an old road that's been converted into a trail. It's a double-track biking trail and runs in both directions. Clove Creek (Wicopee to Fahnestock): This is a 2-mile green single-track trail. It has an easy rating overall but includes a 76-foot blue climb. Stillwater: This double-track trail has some very steep climbs and unpredictable conditions, making it a good trail for experienced mountain bikers. It runs for 3.4 miles and features a 348-foot climb. It takes the average rider about 30 minutes to complete. These trails in Fahnestock State Park are ideal for mountain biking. If you prefer a flatter ride, you can ride a bike through the park. Fred Dill Wildlife Sanctuary The Fred Dill Wildlife Sanctuary is an outdoor oasis right in the heart of Carmel. It has a nice hiking trail and is a great place to bring the bikes for the day. There are some great beginner trails in the sanctuary, and you can connect to the Putnam Trailway if you want to extend your ride. Maybrook Trailway The Maybrook Trailway is a 9-mile trail that runs from Brewster to Pawling. It's part of the Empire State and starts just north of Brewster. You can find a trail entrance right off North Main Street and follow the trail north. It passes through dense woods, takes you by ponds and wetlands, and through farmlands. You'll get to bike over the Towners Bridge and pass by Ice Pond and Lake Tonetta. This section ends in Pawling at the trailhead parking at the intersection of Route 292. Keep in mind that this part of the trail has relatively few access points and crossroads. It has long stretches of trail, making it ideal for a great ride. Putnam Trailway The Putnam Trailway is a section of the Empire State Trail. It runs for 9 miles and is an off-road paved trail. The multi-use trail is perfect for bikers of all abilities and runs from Mahopac to Brewster. The scenic rail trail starts at a trailhead parking area in Mahopac. You can find it at Croton Falls Road and Mud Pond Road intersection, but there are several parking areas along the way, so you can park partway along the trail if you want to make it a shorter ride. Once you get on the trail, it follows the Putnam Trailway north. It winds through the woods and takes you by small lakes and some local communities. It passes through Carmel and ends just west of Brewster. Nimham Mountain Multiple Use Area The Nimham Mountain Multiple Use Area is a popular spot for bikers. The area has three named mountains, making it a fun spot for mountain bikers. The 13 miles of trails feature all types of riding, from easy to black diamond trails. Access Road is a 1-mile dirt and gravel trail with an easy climb. It only takes about 20 minutes to complete this trail, making it a good choice for beginner bikers. Caumsett State Park Caumsett State Park in Huntington features an 8-mile loop mountain biking trail. It's a good trail for all mountain biking skill levels and features a variety of wildflowers to see along the way. The park sits on a scenic peninsula that extends into Long Island Sound and has various trails, including fire roads, single and double tracks, bridle paths, and more. The trails take you near the rocky shoreline, through acres of woodland, and through meadows and salt marsh. The park features 31 mountain biking trails, with many rated easy for beginners. You can also find intermediate trails for a little more of a challenge. Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park You'll find Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park in Yorktown Heights. The park features a variety of trails designed for hiking and biking, or you can pedal along the roads within the park. The Roosevelt Mountain Bike Trail is a 5-mile trail. It's an easy trail, perfect for families or beginner riders. The gravel path runs through hardwood forests and takes you by Crom Pond and Mohansic Lake. Riders who want more mountain biking experience can take the single-track route that runs parallel to the wider dirt trail. This trail starts at the south end of the first parking lot. North County Trailway The North County Trailway is a biking and pedestrian trail on the former Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad. The entire railway runs for over 22 miles, starting in Eastview in Mount Pleasant to the town of Somers on the border of Putman County. There are just over 5 miles of the North County Trailway in Yorktown. You can enter the trail at the parking access just south of Kitchwan or use the two parking areas in Yorktown Heights. The parks and railways near Carmel offer great biking spots whether you like to tackle the mountains or stay on flat ground. The monastery is open every day from April 1st to January 1st. Putnam County Golf Course Just 10 minutes south of Carmel, you'll find the beautiful town of Mahopac, which holds the Putnam County Golf Course. Designed by William F. The 18-hole championship golf course is challenging enough to interest players of all levels. The natural beauty of the Lower Hudson Valley only adds to the spectacular experience of playing here. When Putnam County bought the course in 2004, it became the first golf course owned by a city or town in the country. Course amenities include a driving range, a pro shop, a locker room, showers, and banquet space in the clubhouse. You can access all these facilities with a 2022 season pass. These are available for Putnam County residents over the age of 55 for $1,345 and those under the age of 55 for $1,495. You can explore narrow fairways, sand bunkers, and a landscape full of naturally rolling hills. These natural obstacles make the course fun and interesting. There are also six ponds and a creek, adding a bubbling ambiance throughout the course. You can book a golf session for as little as $25 on a twilight weeknight and up to $79 for an 18-hole weekend morning with golf cart access. Members receive a 20% discount on weekdays. To get there, you'll start at the parking lot and follow a trail that winds about 1.5 miles through the forest. Once you reach the tower and make the climb to the top, you'll enjoy sweeping 360-degree views of the land to the east of the Hudson River Valley. Chuang Yen Monastery Visit the Chuang Yen Monastery, a Buddhist monastery located on a remote hillside near Carmel. Sitting on 125 acres of land, the monastery is home to several temple buildings designed in the architectural style of China's Tang Dynasty. You'll find the largest Buddhist Vairocana statue in the Western Hemisphere. Measuring 37 feet in height, the statue is surrounded by 10,000 smaller Buddha statues. Chuang Yen Monastery is a unique, interesting place to visit, but it's important to note that it is an operational monastery, and guests are asked to be respectful, follow the posted rules, and not enter the restricted areas where the monks live. During this period, guests can explore the history and traditions of monastic life at this Buddhist monastery in the hills of Putnam County. The Zen garden is a treasure of the Chuang Yen Monastery. Bordering the Seven Jewels Lake, the garden offers access to walking paths. You can stroll slowly and contemplatively as you take in the scenic wonders of this outdoor oasis of tranquility. Take a High-Rise Walk on the Walkway Over the Hudson Discover the world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge in Poughkeepsie and Highland, New York. The bridge, now known as the Walkway Over the Hudson, opened in 1889 as the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge to transport raw materials to industrial centers. When it first opened for use, the Walkway Over the Hudson was the world's longest bridge. At 212 feet above the Hudson River, this 1.28-mile linear park offers visitors scenic views north to the Catskill Mountains and south to the Hudson Highlands. The Walkway comprises the Hudson Valley Rail Trail Network, connecting Ulster County's Hudson Valley Rail Trail to the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail. Open from sunrise to sunset throughout the year, the Walkway Over the Hudson offers visitors unobstructed 360-degree views of the Hudson River and the surrounding scenic valley. A distinctive 21-story ADA handicapped-accessible glass-enclosed elevator provides access to the walkway from the Poughkeepsie waterfront at Upper Landing Park. The elevator is open seasonally from 9 a.m. until 90 minutes before the park's closing. You can access the Walkway Over the Hudson from 87 Haviland Road (Highland entrance), 61 Parker Ave. (Poughkeepsie entrance), and 83 N. Water St. in Poughkeepsie (Upper Landing Park) for the elevator entrance. Visit the Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park Take a two-minute drive from downtown Carmel to explore Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park. The park, which encompasses more than 200 acres, offers opportunities for hiking, fishing, picnicking, and swimming at the only public county-owned lake in Putnam. As its name suggests, Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park contains several memorials to those who served in the U.S. military. The lower section of the park features the Veterans Memorial, flanked by an M60A3 tank and a Cobra helicopter suspended approximately 20 feet in the air on the other side. Crossed Navy anchors rest next to the tank. A small veterans museum contains exhibitions that feature authentic memorabilia from before the American Civil War to present-day military operations. Visitor parking is available on Gipsy Trail Road. The cost is $8 a day, $40 for a season's pass for county residents, and $85 for a season's pass for individuals who live outside the county. Senior discounts are also available, and parking is free for veterans. The park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day, and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the fall, winter, and spring. Four Brothers Drive-In One of our team's favorite spots to visit on a warm spring/summer night, Four Brothers Drive-In has mastered the modern drive-in experience. With shows 7 days a week from Spring through the Fall, you are bound to find a movie night showing something for you. The Theatre design is based on family, entertainment, and creating memorable experiences. The Four Brothers' works had to be a pillar of the community by promoting locally sourced foods, unique services, and amazing amenities. The group's passion is, "It's not what is done, but how it's done" this gives you an indication of the attention to detail that goes into each part of their drive-in theatre. If you have a minute, ask them about their parking system to ensure that every patron has an enjoyable viewing experience! Pleasant Valley Drive-In Movie Theater Opening back up in early March, the Pleasant Valley Drive-In Movie Theater is about to be your new favorite seasonal attraction. Located in Barkhamsted, this iconic spot plays films on a 3-acre section of land near the Farmington River. With room for 250 cars on the busiest evening, this is the place to be on a warm Friday night. The theater usually operates on weekends from early spring to fall. In the peak summer season, Thursday is carload night, where tickets for a whole car are only $20. After Labor Day, carload night switches to Fridays. Admission is regularly $10 for adults over 13, $5 for children aged 6-12, and free for children aged five or younger. Be advised that these prices are cash only. Leashed pets are also allowed in the theater area, so you can truly bring the whole family for an evening out. Once the season begins, you can check the theater's websites for the available films. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., and the film starts 30 minutes after sunset. You can enjoy a second film after a brief intermission. Come early to get a good spot, grab some snacks and beverages from the concession stand, and meet movie lovers from all over your state. Once the movie starts, you can turn your radio to the proper station to hear the film's sound. Showings are rain or shine, so plan accordingly for this engaging night of movie magic. Cinema Under the Stars For a drive-in event with a little bit of local flair, check out the Farmington Polo Club's Cinema Under the Stars events. Although this year's season has not yet been announced, last year's began on June 4. Typical events run from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., and you can arrive early to take in the festival atmosphere. Stamford Museum and Nature Center Drive-In Movie Nights Hosted by the famed science center, the Stamford Museum and Nature Center Drive-In Movie Nights offer a great opportunity to see your favorite museum in a new light. Spend your summer Friday nights watching family-friendly gems in the museum's parking lot. Gates open at 6 p.m., and if you come early, you can enjoy wandering Heckscher Farm before the show starts at dusk. For nourishment, enjoy signature snack boxes with popcorn and candy for preorder and peruse a collection of food trucks once parked. Admission is $40 for up to two people and $60 for three or more people, with proceeds going back to the museum's mission. Tickets must be purchased in advance. As the summer season gets closer, visit the museum's website for more information about films and dates. Mansfield Drive-In Theater and Marketplace If you want to do a little shopping with your movie watching, spend a day or weekend exploring the Mansfield Drive-In Theater and Marketplace. On Sundays, look for treasures at the theater's massive flea market, reopening for the season on March 22. From 8 a.m until 2 p.m. you'll have your pick of over 15,000 feet of vendor space, indoors and outdoors, rain or shine. Beginning April 1, the drive-in will open for weekend new-release movies. As the season advances, you can expect more hours, with Wednesdays offering a $26 flat rate for each vehicle. Tickets are usually $12 for ages 12 and over, $9 for children 4-11, and free for children under 3. When you buy a ticket at this theater, you get to watch two films, and there's a 10-minute intermission in between. This is a perfect time to check out the 50s-inspired snack bar, which serves traditional movie fare like drinks and popcorn along with fun surprises like clam fritters. Pets are allowed in the drive-in, but not in the flea market. Bring your whole squad to this Mansfield theater tradition. Remarkable Theater Westport's own Remarkable Theater began with a simple mission: to bring theater to the local community while employing people with disabilities. Today, this drive-in theater plays classic, new, and indie movies right on the Saugatuck River. After navigating to the theater area with your pre-purchased ticket, volunteers and employees will help you find your perfect spot for the film. Although the theater doesn't offer food or drinks, they encourage you to bring your own, especially if it supports the excellent local Westport restaurant scene. While films will play in light rain, expect to reschedule for heavy rain or other weather conditions.
