Fahnestock State Park Outdoor enthusiasts will love the recreation opportunities offered by Fahnestock State Park. This 14,086-acre facility features picnic areas, hiking trails, campgrounds, and fishing, hunting, and birding opportunities. The facility is also home to various activities, such as the Taconic Outdoor Education Center, which provides Fahnestock Winter Park. The winter park features over 20 kilometers of groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Fishing aficionados will enjoy the park's multiple water features. There are four ponds and two lakes with a variety of fish, including bass, pickerel, and rainbow trout. Please note that you must have a permit from the Department of Environmental Conservation to fish in the freshwater area. The former site of the Putnam County Racetrack and fairgrounds is now a nature preserve that features picnic areas, educational information, and trails. Although it may feel like you're miles away from civilization, you'll find the sanctuary conveniently between the Putnam Plaza and downtown. The Fred Dill Wildlife Sanctuary has well-marked trails, with round signs for the Duck Trail, the Leaf Trail, and the Turtle trail, each with its respective animal. Although they have good footing, the trails are relatively steep and have a couple of steady inclines. This is a good choice if you plan to take your hike to the next level and run the trail. Before exploring the sanctuary, check out the educational tour guide and map. The sanctuary features 12 stations that have unique features. The interpretive guide is informative and entertaining, with well-marked areas. A pond and a pavilion with picnic tables at the far end of the sanctuary are the perfect places to eat lunch after a good hike. The park is located between Long Pond Road and Long Pond in Mahopac and features 32 acres of land and water, with 18 acres dedicated to water and land activities. It boasts picnic and playground areas, a spacious beach, four tennis courts, a baseball/football field, paddle ball courts, and a concession stand. The picnic area features grills and tables under a pavilion — ideal for large gatherings. The real highlight of Sycamore Park is Dog Park, a beloved dog playground. Bring your furry friend along for all kinds of fun. This facility includes two fenced-off runs designed to allow dogs to run off-leash and a designated play area for small and senior dogs. The park is a members-only facility, costing $25 per year for residents and $75 per year for non-residents. What better way to spend time in nature than with your faithful pooch? Enjoy Winter Sports at Fahnestock Winter Park Before the snow melts, make sure you enjoy your favorite winter sports at Fahnestock Winter Park, right here in Carmel. Part of Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, this winter wonderland has more than 12 miles of well-kept ski trails, a network of blazed snowshoe trails, and space for sledding and tubing. Bring your own equipment or rent skis, snowshoes, or sledding tubes from the park. You can also hire baby polks so the littlest members of your family can join in the fun. After a busy day on the slopes, unwind with concession stand treats around the outdoor fire pit. Location: 1570 Route 301, Carmel. Hours: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, subject to snow availability and holidays. Cost: Trail pass $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+ and juniors under 17, sledding pass $3 for all ages, additional costs for rentals. Connect With Nature at Fahnestock State Park Fahnestock Winter Park isn't the only place to have fun outdoors in Fahnestock State Park. This 14,086-acre park is an outdoor playground with plenty of space for you to enjoy your favorite activities. Hike the trails and keep your eyes peeled for local bird life. Enjoy a leisurely boat ride or fish for rainbow trout or bass in Stillwater or Canopus Lake. You'll need a permit, but you can get one from a local town hall or sporting goods store. Admire the View From the Top of Ninham Mountain For spectacular views of the New York City skyline, you can't beat the summit of Ninham Mountain. Take the gravel road leading from the parking lot to the fire tower, which provides views right across to Manhattan on a clear day. While it's only a 15-minute walk, it's a steep incline, so your legs may feel a little wobbly on the way down. You can explore the 10-mile mountain trail network if you want a longer walk. The paths are popular with mountain bikers, so keep your wits about you if you're on foot. Location: Gipsy Trail Road, Carmel. Hours: All year round. Cost: Free. Have a Picnic at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park With playgrounds, grills, and picnic tables, Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park is the perfect spot for a family lunch outdoors. And since it spans, there's plenty of room to spread out and play. During the summer months, you can cool off in the park's lake, and children ages 16 and under can fish from the pier without a license. Just make sure to take a moment and pay your respects to the veterans this park honors. The park features several war memorials and vehicles, including an M-60 tank and a Cobra-318 helicopter. We recommend driving 20 minutes to Katonah in the morning to leave the whole day for exploring. The 234-acre space features an authentic Chinese friendship garden, a historic tree walk, and one of Westchester County's largest lilac collections. The memorial garden honors William and Mildred Lasdon, the park's namesakes, who originally lived on the grounds where it now stands. The onsite veteran's museum also provides the opportunity for quiet reflection. The seasonal dinosaur garden and events, such as the annual train show and butterflies exhibit, are great fun for kids. We recommend the Beacon tours, which see you paddling from Long Dock Park, around 25 minutes from Carmel, to Cold Spring. The leisurely three-hour journey helps you build your confidence while admiring the sites of the Hudson Highlands. Once you arrive in Cold Spring, your guide will shuttle you back to Beacon. Danbury Railway Museum Housed in the former Danbury Union Station, the Danbury Railway Museum celebrates the local area's history as a rail transport hub. Visitors can marvel at historic trains, including Budd Rail diesel cars, a former New Haven Railroad class caboose, and passenger cars dating back to the 1920s. There are also fascinating train artifacts on-site, including railroad timetables, photographs of trains at work, and books documenting railway history. Visit between April and November to ride the Railyard Local. Special Pumpkin Patch and Santa trains also run during the holiday seasons. Location: 120 White St., Danbury. Danbury Museum and Historical Society Danbury Museum and Historical Society is four museums in one. As you pour over them, you'll learn more about Danbury's role in the Revolutionary War, its historic hatting industry, early schooling, and one of the city's most beloved operatic talents. Brookfield Museum and Historical Society Brookfield Museum and Historical Society aims to preserve the history of this Connecticut town, located around 12 minutes northeast of Danbury. It welcomes visitors to browse the museum and library. There's also a research center on-site with a fascinating collection of maps, deeds, newspapers, photographs, and old tax records from the Brookfield area. Make sure you stop to admire the gardens before you leave. Location: 165 Whisconier Road, Brookfield. Hours: Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Cost: Free, but donations are welcome. Keeler Tavern Museum The Keeler Tavern Museum protects the historic Keeler Tavern and helps visitors understand its significance to the community of Ridgefield, which is located about 20 minutes south of Danbury. The museum shares the history of the tavern and town through memorabilia from the Keeler, Resseguie, and Gilbert families. Historic furnishings, an original engraving of the Battle of Ridgefield, and the first T. Keeler's Inn sign are among the museum's treasures. Local collector and fashion designer Larry Aldrich founded The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, also in Ridgefield, in 1964. It’s Connecticut's only contemporary art museum and the oldest in the country. It hosts exhibitions rather than displaying a permanent collection, so there's always something new to see. While some feature current artists, others showcase works from the mid-to-late 20th century. Seeing the evolution of art through its diverse pieces is fascinating for anyone interested in this visual medium. Location: 258 Main St., Ridgefield. Northrop House Museum Experience how one of Sherman's most prominent families lived at the building that is now the Northrop House Museum, located 25 minutes north of Danbury. David Northrop Jr., a representative in the state legislature, built the property in 1829. He lived here with his father, David Northrop, Sherman's first town clerk, and later his son, David Ward Northrop. The youngest Northrop became Secretary of State and the mayor and postmaster of Middletown. See the second-floor ballroom and the cow barn before following in the Northrops’ footsteps on the walking track. Location: 10 Route 37 Center, Sherman. Hours: By appointment, May through October. It was subsequently traded until the Herman Historical Society purchased it in 1998 and transformed it into a museum. There may be no more fitting place to tell the story of Sherman's history. Browse the Native American artifacts and old photos documenting the town's evolution. The on-site gift shop maintains the site's retail tradition. Location: 10 Route 37 Center, Sherman. Hours: Noon to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday, April through December. Cost: Free. Wilton Historical Society For your final history fix, drive to Wilton, which is around 30 minutes south of Danbury. It's home to the Wilton Historical Society, which features six historic sites. Betts-Sturgis-Blackmar House and Sloan-Raymond-Fitch House are properties that belonged to notable Wilton residents. You can also see the Burn Barn Gallery, Abbott Barn, a blacksmith shop, and a two-seat privy. Try these destinations for delightful recreation that gets you moving this season. Fahnestock Winter Park Fahnestock Winter Park is a part of the larger Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park. The seasonal winter park offers abundant activities that take advantage of this area’s weather. With an elevation of 1,100 feet, this location gets plenty of snow throughout the winter season. The forested trails help protect the snow base, creating ideal conditions for sledding, tubing, skiing, and snowshoeing. You’ll find over 12 miles of groomed ski trails for classic skiing and skate skiing. When conditions permit, the park maintains three levels of ski trails across easy, intermediate, and advanced terrain. A blazed snowshoe trail network provides many opportunities for trekking through this winter wonderland. With three distinct trails to choose from, you can undertake a snowshoeing adventure that matches your skill level. The groomed sledding hill is a family favorite, conveniently located right by the parking lot. Though human activity is abundant around the park, you may also spot some wildlife among the mountain laurel and hemlock groves. Squirrels, deer, fishers, and beavers all call this area home. You might spot their footprints in the snow or even catch a glimpse of the creatures themselves. Ravens, chickadees, and pileated woodpeckers are also found in the area during the winter months. This area features some historic highlights, such as the remains of stone walls from the 1800s on the Old Pasture Loop. On the CCC Loop, you’ll find the foundations and chimney of a 1930s Civilian Conservation Corp camp still standing. Fahnestock Winter Park features a cozy lodge where you can enjoy hot food, snacks, and beverages. You can relax inside or gather around the outdoor fire pit. Restrooms and changing facilities are available for your convenience. The lodge offers equipment rentals for skate skiing, classic skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and tow-behind skier baby pulks. Location: 1570 Route 301, Carmel. Brewster Ice Arena The Brewster Ice Arena offers various winter activities on the indoor studio rink and outdoor pond. The pond surface is subject to change, but it typically presents plenty of opportunities for recreation between Nov. 14 and Feb. 26. You can enjoy public skating on the pond from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on weekdays, with additional afternoon sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays starting at 3:10 p.m. The Friday Night Skate from 8:15 to 10:15 p.m. is a fun late-night way to celebrate the onset of the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, you can enjoy public skating between 12:45 and 2:15 p.m. and from 3 to 4:30 p.m. From 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, the public may skate indoors on the studio rink. The Brewster Ice Arena also offers figure skating lessons, a skating club, and hockey teams for both children and adults. Sticks & Pucks sessions take place on the pond during the afternoons from Tuesday to Thursday, and they’re inside on Monday. You’ll find evening sessions in the studio on weeknights if you're interested in open hockey. Open hockey takes place on the pond from 6:20 to 7:50 a.m. on weekends. Location: 63 Fields Lane, Brewster. Thunder Ridge Ski Area The Thunder Ridge Ski Area offers both day and night skiing with 22 trails, four magic carpets, and three chairlifts. If you’d like to hone your skills throughout the season, you can enroll in a six-week program or sign up for daily lessons. Thunder Ridge even offers race programs for skiers between the ages of 9 and 20. If you’d like to head out and practice skiing on your own simply, you can purchase your lift tickets and reserve ski rentals online to ensure a great experience. Thunder Ridge rents skis, boots, and poles for skiing as well as snowboards, boots, and wrist guards for snowboarding. The trail levels include easier, more difficult, and most difficult, providing plenty of variety for visitors. Location: 137 Birch Hill Road, Patterson. Evarts Rink While most of the winter sports in and around Carmel are dependent on the weather, Evarts Rink offers an escape from the limitations of the weekly forecast with its fully enclosed ice rink. From September through June, the rink is open for hour-long figure skating sessions starting at 8, 9:10, 10:20, and 11:30 a.m. You can walk on for a session anywhere from 30 minutes to three and a half hours on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. You can also walk on for 30 or 60 minutes on Saturday between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. On Wednesdays, you can opt for a 30-, 60-, or 90-minute session between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Location: 240 Jay St., Katonah. Danbury Ice Arena The Danbury Ice Arena is another popular option for indoor skating. With two rinks running seven days a week, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and glide. Pair an evening of skating with a romantic dinner for the ultimate date night, or head out with the clan for a family fun night. The arena hosts public skates, Sticks & Pucks, open hockey, and freestyle figure skating. The Danbury Ice Arena steps up the fun with DJ Skate sessions from mid-October to mid-April. During these skate times, you’ll enjoy strobe lights, jumbotron videos, and bouncing tunes from a live DJ. PawSafe Animal Rescue PawSafe Animal Rescue started in 1995 to provide homes to companion animals without homes and rescue animals from kill shelters. The goals of PawSafe include: Preventing cruelty to animals through animal protection laws. Sharing their knowledge of animal welfare organizations. Reducing overpopulation through spay/neuter programs. Developing compassion towards these animals through community education. PawSafe also works to find homes or shelters for injured, sick, abandoned and abused animals. Take Me Home Pet Rescue Take Me Home Pet Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of puppies and dogs located in high-kill shelters. After a veterinarian checks the animals, they are sent to area foster homes that open their homes and volunteer their time to care for these dogs until they're adopted. Available animals are viewable online, along with the adoption questionnaire to get you started toward pet ownership. Paws Crossed also has a special Seniors for Seniors adoption program that matches owners over 70 with pets over seven years old for a discount. We know your holiday to-do list is already long enough, so we've researched and found these awesome charity events you can support close to home during the holidays. Peekskill NAACP Freedom Fund Awards Ceremony Dust off your best holiday outfit for the Peekskill National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Freedom Fund Awards Ceremony. Held at the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater in Peekskill, 34 minutes southwest of Carmel, this event celebrates the people who promote positive change, justice, and peace in the local area. Money raised through admission and raffle tickets also supports the Peekskill chapter of the NAACP. The cost of the ticket includes access to the event's open bar and after-party. Special guest appearances should make this an evening not to forget. Date: Nov. 12. Time: 6 p.m. for the VIP reception and 7 p.m. for general admission. Location: Paramount Hudson Valley Theater, 1008 Brown St., Peekskill. Cost: $80 general admission, $100 VIP tickets. Generation Impact: The Big Launch 2022-2023 Young people are planning big things in Greenwich, 45 minutes south of Carmel, and they want you to get involved. As a young person, it's easy to feel powerless. However, you'll soon realize that you can do big things if you join forces with like-minded people when you become part of Generation Impact. Generation Impact is an initiative for high school girls committed to working together for positive change, and it all kicks off at the Big Launch in November. The program encourages 100 members to raise or donate $100. When the program ends in April 2023, that money will become a $10,000 grant for a local non-profit organization committed to helping young people. Past grants have helped a domestic violence crisis center, mental health services, and a homeless shelter. Register your interest via the Eventbrite website to get involved in the latest round of giving. Date: Nov. 13 for the Big Launch, Jan. 29 for the Big Review, and April 2 for the Big Give. Ann's Place Festival of Trees Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Festival of Trees in Danbury, 21 minutes east of Carmel. Since its inception, this event has raised more than $3.5 million for Ann's Place, which supports local cancer patients. Admiring the decorated trees is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. The Festival of Trees Boutique features artisanal and handmade items you won't find in department stores. They're perfect for your loved ones this holiday season. Try your luck in the raffle or charity auction for a gift they won't forget. Face painting, craft classes, and LEGO stations will keep the kids busy. Stay late on Friday for Sip, Stroll, & Shop. This evening event provides the perfect opportunity to kickstart your festive spending. Return after hours on Saturday for Taps & Trees, a strictly adults-only event with craft brews from more than 10 local breweries, pub food, and live music. Make sure to buy a separate ticket if you want to enjoy these events. Date: Nov. 18-20. It's worth taking the 75-minute drive to Wallingford in your new GMC vehicle to enjoy the festivities at the annual Taste for CHASE. Just make sure you bring a designated driver because you won't want to miss indulging in the spirit and wine tasting. Taste tapas-style dishes while you enjoy the blues and classic rock tunes from Blues on the Rocks. The Taste for CHASE event is always a lot of fun, but there's a serious reason behind it. Chase Broussard created The Chase Fund two weeks before succumbing to lymphoma. The illness claimed his life just three days before his 27th birthday. This event remembers him and supports the nurses who help cancer patients every day. Chase believed that cancer research was adequately funded, so he created his foundation to help the guardian angels he felt were often overlooked. Holiday on the Lake The full program wasn't yet finalized at the time of writing this article, but this year's Holiday on the Lake is already shaping up to be one of Carmel's best. Families can stroll around the Christmas village, watch live music and the tree lighting, and meet Santa Claus. Join the evening Santa Stroll and make a donation to the American Cancer Society. A Night of Hope for MBC Do your part to end metastatic breast cancer at the annual Night of Hope benefit dinner in Danbury, 23 minutes east of Carmel. The event ticket includes a seated dinner with beer and wine. Your donation will go to Ann's Place and the Cancer Couch Foundation, a privately funded Connecticut non-profit committed to cancer research. The night celebrates the life of the Cancer Couch Foundation founder, Rebecca Timlin-Scalera, who passed away in 2019. So, wear your holiday best and raise a glass at this event, knowing you're doing your bit to help support others and cancer research. Date: Dec. 3. Most of their restaurants provide a warm, friendly service that naturally comes from being a family-owned establishments. Whether you’re a local or just visiting for the weekend, you’ll be sure to find a charming spot to dine in. Read on to learn about three romantic restaurants that Meadowland GMC recommends for your next date night in Carmel. Prato Trattoria This family-run restaurant is an Italian gem among the romantic eateries on this list. The Spaccarelli family is proud of their northern and southern Italian heritage, and their pride shines through in how they showcase their homemade dishes. These include creamy mozzarella, crusty artisan breads, fresh daily pasta, scrumptious Tiramisu, and hand-whipped gelato. First-time visitors are usually thrown by its location in a strip mall and the sign that touts it as a pizza restaurant. However, they are ultimately pleased with the welcoming ambiance and decor of the interior. The front of the restaurant has a casual, traditional pizzeria design that’s perfect for feasting on Italian pies. The other part of the building is the perfect setting for your intimate date night due to its dining room style and extensive Italian menu. One menu fave is the chicken rustica, which is chicken breast sauteed in garlic, white wine, and rosemary and served with sausage, potatoes, and spicy cherry peppers. Patrons describe the veal Francese and veal piccata as outstanding with nice, tender medallions. They say that the Prato salad is amazing due to its artichoke hearts and lemony vinaigrette dressing. David Gallo from Yorktown Heights created My Cousin's in 2021. He knows every facet of the restaurant business: from washing dishes to cooking and running the front of the house. Gallo played a vital role in the opening of another Mahopac eatery, The Chophouse Grille. After selling his part of that business, he ventured into fine dining at Del Posto, which is a former Michelin star restaurant in New York. That decision resulted in his current ownership on a casual upscale level. The name “My Cousin's” is a testament to Gallo's late friend, with whom he shared the dream of owning a restaurant one day. Since its opening, the spot has been the talk of the town. The white tablecloth dining experience is perfect for date nights or anniversary celebrations. Frequent diners refer to the vibe there as classy, hip, elegant, and chill. The dish offerings are influenced by the expertise of Gallo and his family. Visitors can't get enough of the cauliflower patties that come from his grandmother's recipe. They are fried like pancakes and made with garlic, parsley, and parmesan cheese. Served with sriracha aioli, they’re a highly recommended appetizer. The beef and pork meatballs are named after Gallo's Aunt Chrissy and are another appetizer favorite. They come with homemade red sauce and ricotta cheese. For your entrees, you’ll find an assortment of proteins. Most people suggest the Chicken Milanese topped with an arugula salad or the smothered pork chop served with Lyonnaise potatoes. Others say that the Diablo Di Mare, a seafood fettuccine in a spicy tomato sauce, is the best choice. Additionally, Sis's Favorite is a decadent linguine dish that gives the nod to Gallo's vegetarian sister, Alyssa. Regardless of what dish is considered the best, everyone agrees on the impeccable service, attentive staff, and appreciative visits from the owner. Since its opening, My Cousin's has added a Sunday brunch from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. If you’re so inclined, you could have your date night earlier in the day with cannoli pancakes and candied bacon grilled cheese sandwiches. Owner Zygmunt Pastuszka is very proud of his lineage and the cuisine that he prepares. This cozy, casual spot rounds out this list of date night restaurants. With a fireplace that sits in the middle of the dining area, Northwood Inn is a charming setting that’s infused with family-owned warmth. Be sure to start out with their cold Polish platter, which features kielbasa, cheese, marinated vegetables, and a variety of Polish ham and is served with Polish bread. Another delightful appetizer is the bacon-wrapped pierogi. A third option is the sirloin carpaccio that’s served with garlic toast. Golabki, a traditional Polish entree, consists of fresh cabbage leaves stuffed with seasoned ground pork and rice that visitors love ordering. The Northwood chicken dish is another favorite in which the chicken breast is breaded, baked, and rolled with crab meat and spinach stuffing.
